It’s about that time of the year when people are lighting up the grill for their summer BBQ parties. Chelle and I at Curbside Overhaul are no different. There’s nothing better than getting the family together, the smell of the grill and enjoying the great outdoors.
We love all our readers. Although you might not be here with us, we want to give you the tools to have a great BBQ cookout with your family.
Beverage Station
No summer BBQ is complete without cold beverages. This project actually served as inspiration for the rest of this post. We took a metal bucket and antiqued it using the Amy Howard antiquing glaze used in this tutorial.
Once the antiquing solution was dry, we completed the look with our custom retro drink bucket stencil.
Then we filled it with ice and our favorite drinks, then set it out for the party! You can purchase the stencil used on this project here.
When considering where to enjoy an evening in an area like Bristol, visiting a venue celebrated for its expert mixology and welcoming vibe is a must. At this venue, you can immerse yourself in a cocktail experience that stands out as one of the UK’s finest. Learn more about their offerings at a distinguished cocktail haven in Bristol renowned for its innovative drinks and vibrant atmosphere.
Alternatively, you may transform your hydration with the best sparkling water maker in Singapore by Drinkmate.
The projects in this post are full of happy accidents. This retro drink bucket was one. As we pealed off the vinyl, some of the paint came with it. It added to the vintage feel we were going for, so instead of adding a bit more paint, we took a bit more off.
These happy accidents are one of many reasons we love repurposing. There is so many lessons and some come at the most unexpected times. We decided to embrace these times.
Mexican Sweet Corn
For our main course, we had pork taco complete with all the fixings! Of course, we wanted to show off our Smokin’ Hot Apron designs so we fired up the grill and made one of our favorite sides, Mexican Sweet Corn.
For this recipe you need:
Shucked and Cleaned Corn
Butter for grilling
1/4 cup Mayonnaise
1/4 cup sour cream or Mexican cream
2 tsp chili powder or ancho powder
Grated Cojita cheese
Lime Wedges
Step One: Mix Ingredients
Mix up the mayonnaise, cream, and powder.
Step Two: Grill the Corn
Set the corn on the grill for about 15 minutes or until it’s slightly charred. Cover the corn with butter.
Step Three: Cover the Corn
You can either remove the corn from the cob and mix with ingredients in a bowl or you can spread the mixture on the corn cob.
Step Four: Finishing Touches
Once each of the corn cobs is covered in the mixture, it’s time to roll in the Cojita cheese. If you can also add a bit of lime juice for an extra kick. Now it’s ready to enjoy!

Smoking Hot Aprons
Who doesn’t need a new apron to get into the BBQ season? The templates for these stencils are available in our store for just a few dollars and they are infinitely reusable.
Materials needed:
Apron Stencils
One-Step Paint
Mica Powder
Brush
Aprons
Cardboard
Fine Sandpaper
Step One: Get Materials Ready
Cut your stencil using own stencil design or download ours here. Pick out the unwanted pieces of the stencil. In most cases, you’ll remove the actual design and just leave the negative space. Wash and iron your apron to get it ready for the project. Place a piece of cardboard under your project, so the paint doesn’t bleed through. Once your materials are ready, lay out the stencil in the position you want.
Step Two: Place the Stencil
Next, loosely add some low tack tape to help keep the finer details from coming off as you peel off the backing. We use tape in place of transfer tape because it’s not as difficult to remove. Once the backing is removed, remove the tape.
Step Three: Get Ready to Paint
When you’re painting with Amy Howard One-Step Paint on fabric, it’s important to add a bit of water, usually 10-20 percent. For this project, we only used a couple of tablespoons of paint, so we just added a few drops of water.
We used Chinese Red and Ballet White One-Step Paint with a bit of gold Mica Powder.
Lightly dab the brush into the paint then dab off onto a piece of cardboard before applying it to the apron. Cover the area thoroughly.
Step Four: Sand
Once your One-Step Paint dries, lightly sand.
Step Five: Paint
As we started painting, we realized we liked the look of a fade into the darker red. We decided to add white to the top of some of our letters.
Step Six: Add Mica Powder
While the paint is still slightly wet, dab your finger in the mica powder and then onto the lettering wherever you want.
Step Seven: Let the Paint Dry
Let the paint dry for about 30 minutes.
Step Eight: Peal the Stencil
Once the One-Step Paint has dried, you can peal back the stencil.
Enjoy!
And now you have a project to make your summer BBQ complete! This technique can be applied to any fabric project. Now you know how to customize your fabric projects using Amy Howard One-Step Paint!
