Spring is just around the corner and we want to bring all the birds to our yard, so we’re putting together unique bird feeders! Bird feeders are great for any backyard during all times of the year because even in winter the birds have to scrounge to find things to eat.
Hint: These unique bird feeders would also make lovely Mother’s Day gifts, housewarming gifts, Christmas gifts, etc.
Unique Hummingbird Feeders
Hummingbirds are possibly the most delightful birds in our area. There’s nothing better than watching them zoom about. A few years ago, I made an upcycled hummingbird feeder out of an old pop bottled and plastic spoons. To this day, it’s still one of my favorite projects I’ve done, but I don’t have a good source for the colored plastic spoons. Once you collect the materials, all you need to buy is A feeding tube.
If you’re not feeling super crafty or don’t have cute spoons at your disposal, there’s still lots of adorable hummingbird feeders out there.
How to Make Hummingbird Food
To make hummingbird food simply boil 4 cups of water, remove from the heat, add 1 cup of sugar, and stir until the sugar dissolves. Let the mixture cool completely, then pour into your hummingbird feeder. You can store excess sugar water for up to two weeks in the fridge. You can also buy this mixture from the store, but please do not buy the red dye version, as it is poisonous for the birds.
Bluejay Bird Feeders
Blue Jays have very sturdy black bills to crack acorns and nuts easily. Most of their diets composed of seeds, nuts, and acorns. They also eat small creatures like beetles, grasshoppers, and caterpillars, which make them good garden companions. Other than this, they also eat grains, peanuts, shell, suet blends, cracked corn, mealworms, orange halves, and Bark Butter Bits. For best results, set up a large feeder in an open area, ideally which is near to the shrubbery.

Cool Bird Feeders
For me, bird feeders made from repurposed items are the coolest. You’re usually able to save money using materials you already have and it’s more personal to you.
I found a few ideas on Sadie Seasongoods. She has repurposed pot lids and coffee mugs!
You can also repurpose plastic jugs or juice cartons.

Mealworm Bird Feeders
The beautiful bluebirds have a special fondness for mealworms. Some of these mealworm bird feeders have a cage design that bluebirds fit perfectly into, which cuts down on the squirrels that might rob the bird feeder. Interestingly, most birds will not enter a feeder. However, bluebirds and Carolina wrens will, so these unique bird feeders are perfect if you want to attract them to your yard.
The Erva Bluebird dish is the perfect example of a bird feeder that’s for the birds and not the squirrels. It can also be used for Mealworm dish can also be used to feed smaller fruit-eating birds such as Orioles, Robins, Cardinals, and Catbirds.
This second mealworm bird feeder has plexiglass that serves a similar function and helps keep bully birds out.
Sunflower Bird Feeders
Sunflowers are my favorite flower. I just think they are delightful. Not only are they beautiful, but the birds love to eat their seeds. Once they’re growing season is over, you can let the sunflowers stay until the birds eat all their seeds or once your sunflowers have started to droop or wilt it’s the perfect time to turn your sunflowers into bird feeders.
Poles for Bird Feeders
Once you pick out your bird feeder, you can decide how you will hang it. Some people opt for a tree branch or off their porch, but you can choose to hang it from a pole or stand.
Stands for Bird Feeders
Adding a bird feeder stand can help deter squirrels, they range from basic to decorative to having a whole bird feeding station. They can be simple or ornate, depending on your preference. You will want a durable bird feeder stand since it will likely be exposed to the rain. I recommend finding something with a heavy-grade steel design with rust-free and weather-resistant powder coating, such as this basic bird feeder stand.
In some cases, they involve a birdbath tray and additional hooks for more feeders, flowers, lights, or whatever you wish to hang next to them.
